2023 July Video Camp

Beargrass Media Video Camp July 10-14, 2023

(FROM FRIDAY 7/13)

Sunny made a montage of the video camp with a lot of shots from the Tuesday animation exercise:

From Thursday afternoon to Friday afternoon, the kids participated in the 24-hour film challenge.  Each team was given a very similar assignment listed below:

July 2023 – 24 Hour Film Elements

Character:  Wes or Winnie Underwood – Event Organizer

Prop: Red Hot Candy

Line:  “It is (it’s) not brain surgery”

Three genres were randomly drawn by each team, and each team chose from one of those three.

Team Patrick drew the mystery genre and made this film called “Mostly Dead”

Team Marshall drew the Spy/Fantasy genre and made this film about the Super Secret Serum

Team Sunny drew the Buddy Film and the Sci-Fi Genre and made this film.

Team Jon-Mark drew the Medical Genre and made “The Show Must Go On”

Three Extra Genre Pieces were added Thursday morning.

Team Jon-Mark finished their movie in the Sci-Fi Genre:

Team Patrick finished their piece with a combination of the comedy and thriller genres.  (Trigger alert – there is simulated gross stuff)

We coveredhow to make Foley sounds in videos, and here is a little snippet

(FROM WEDNESDAY 7/12)

We covered what a film genre is at today’s camp and then gave all the teams the same script.  Each team was to make a film using the same words and then use the expectations of the  genre to make different movies from the other teams.

Genre Script – July 2023

First Shot:  Character standing in a mid-shot looking right at the camera and says:  “Fate, am I right?”

Then several shots of just a few seconds apiece that tell a story using the following voice over.

VOICE OVER:

You never really know when a physical object will enter your life that will change everything.  And this one literally dropped right into my lap.  The first question that came to mind was:  Where did it come from?   But if you ask a “Where” question, you know that you are going to need to also ask How?  Who?  What?  When?  and most importantly:  WHY?  I might not have found ALL the answers, but at least there are clues…

Team Marshall made their film in the comedy genre.

Team Sunny decided to do a longer film based on their genre,so it is listed here in a movie poster,  3 episodes, and a trailer and a movie poster.

(FROM TUESDAY 7/11)

We did a lot of animations today, and they are scattered across several iPads of the kids.

Here is a montage of the animations:

Since Sunny has a college degree in animations, and the kids seemed jazzed about her presentation, we are linking her animation page below:

https://www.sunnyrae.art/

And Sunny has provided the following information about what equipment she uses.

While I now work with the Adobe Animation program and a Huion Kamvas tablet, those are both rather expensive.

Huion is great brand that makes smaller graphic drawing tablets that are cheaper as well, and plug into a laptop or computer.
Bamboo is another brand. A couple free/cheap animation program options are Pencil2D animation, FireAlpaca, and Blender
And of course, if you already have an iPad, Procreate is a one time purchase of 15$, and can be used with an Apple Pencil.

DETAILS:

The students will learn how to write, record, edit, and publish video productions.   The students will use personal devices like phones and tablets tablets as well as camp-supplied iPads, video cameras, microphones, a teleprompter, green screen, etc.  Students who have participated in one of our video camps before will be put in a group appropriate to their experience and ability.

There will be an official welcome packet that comes out the week prior to the camp with some more exact details, but  we wanted to give you a heads-up on what to expect.  This will include what we know now and what could change between now and then related to pandemic precautions.

There is still time to request to be paired up with someone who is already registered or to tell a friend to sign up for the camp to join you.  Sooner is better for us, because as the number of students grows, sometimes we pull in additional help for parts of the camp.

The camp will include some indoor classroom activity, some outdoor instruction and recording, some group projects, and some solo projects.

We will host a video during the week of June 26th for anyone who wants to get last minute questions answered.  We’ll send out the link to that meeting with the welcome packet on June 26th.

Since we spent part of the last 3 years having kids work on video projects independently and/or remotely, we have learned that they gain some valuable experience on some of the solo type work on a phone or tablet, and we incorporate that into the camp.  We would like as many students as possible to bring their portable devices with them to camp.  If your student will NOT be bringing a portable device to camp, please let us know, so we can take an inventory of who will have what.   Students will bring their devices, their lunch, and be dressed for some outdoor time.

All of the most up-to-date camp details will be on this camp page.  We will post videos for the students and link them on the web site, but if any of the kids already have their own YouTube channel, they can post it, and we will link to it.

Looking forward to connecting with these students this summer.  Please feel free to reach out in advance if you have questions.
