BELOW THIS LINE ARE VIDEOS FROM 2019 and 2020
March 11, 2020 – Bagel Journey
Sometimes when you are really hungry, you need a friend to help get food delivered to you, and you don’t really want to know how it got there.
March 4, 2020 – Inner Self
Ever have a day where you have to make a bunch of deceisions and don’t know what to do? You could try listening to your inner self. But what if your inner self has multiple personalities? Who should you listen to then?
February 26, 2020 – Heavy Downbeat
Ever stepped on the bathroon scale wearing earbuds and wondered if the type of music you were listening to would affect how much you weigh? Would “heavier” music add more weight than “lighter music”? Here at Lucas Laboratories, we do experiments to answer these types of pressing questions. Don’t believe me? Just watch!
February 19, 2020 – Sleight of Hand
Ever see one of those mind-blowing card tricks? Well buckle your safety belts, because THIS trick is going to throw you for a loop.
February 12, 2020 – Love Letters and Lovely Jokes
Everyone gets excited for the mail around Valentines Day. You never know when you might get a love letter. Plus, there’s always time for a corny joke or three or four. The kids got a much bigger window into the editing process this week including how to duck audio and match music to video.
February 5, 2020 – Autocorrect
First graders are so annoying, and autocorrect is not always what it’s cracked up to be. It’s hard to get your work done when you are right next to the peanut gallery. You might even have to resort to archaic practices.
January 29, 2020 – The Standoff
The kids were informed by the school cafeteria that there wasn’t enough dessert for everyone. And THAT is where our story begins. The group that goes to lunch first gets dessert. But how will they decide, and who will prevail?

Mr. Ice in Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade
Breaking News, the Lincoln Lens is reporting on the top story that Mr. Ice is inthe Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. That’s why he wasn’t at the final push for the Lincoln fundraiser, but he sent his encouragement back to all of the students. As God as my witness, I thought Turkeys could fly. ENjoy!

Week 6 Political Ads
Since it was election week, we made political ads for a fictitious run for class president by Samira. Hopefully the kids will pick up on the idea that the same footage in a positive ad when turned black and white, slowed down, and played over ominous music makes a pretty standard negative ad. Maybe they will even develop a healthy skepticism against being manipulated by said ads. Also, with a little extra time at teh end, several of the kids recorded the classic “Invisible Bench” sketch.

Week 5 – Armed and Dangerous
For Halloween week, we decided to do a little spooky video with a prop that the kids could not get enough of. Because the main skit ideas were very short, everyone got to try them out, which makes the finished product a little longer and probably at least 80% bloopers. But honestly, kids seem to have more fun with bloopers anyway.

Week 4 – Check it Out (Faces and Books)
The fourth week of the club, we broke into 2 groups and made 2 very similar videos in a series called “Check it Out”. Each one features group narration, and every kid in the club spoke on camera (even the ones for whom that is not their first instinct.) There was no need for a teleprompter this week, because all of the lines are short enough to just repeat back on camera. We even got a bit into the editing process, so the kids saw the “behind the scenes” part as well. Here are the 2 videos:
Check it Out – Faces
This explores the differences in peoples’ faces, and hopefully, everyone comes away feeling like their face is unique and beautiful.
Check it Out – Books
This explores the many adventures you can have just by picking up a book and turning the pages.

Week 3 featured us breaking up into 4 groups: One group did stop-motion animation, and the other three groups did video skits. Each skit was very similar in that they are all about 1 minute and each contains: A stop-motion animated intro, music topical to the title, an establishing shot, and small props.
- Cha Ching is based on an old Shel Silverstein poem called “Smart” although they performed it almost completely without words.
- Magic Phone is about two tricksters who get hoist by their own petard. The kids came up with the alternative ending, which was a funny idea.
- Wish is also about a magical device with potentially dangerous consequences. We made a mess, then quickly restored order in the library.
All three are strung together here. Enjoy!

Fun second meeting today where the kids did more of the camera work and a little entry into editing. Here is fictional episode 1 to the fictional TV show “Lincoln Lens”, which is about the very real place of the Lincoln Performing Arts School.

October 2, 2019
We had a fun first meeting today with a great group of kids. We split off into two groups, half with Patrick Fitzgerald and half with Jon-Mark Sandquist. Each goup recorded its own piece of video and got back together at the end. Due to an equipment malfunction in the group 2 microphone, that piece will not be ready until next week, but please enjoy the group 1 offering entitled: “Postcards from the Other Side”.
The instructions were given in a screenplay linked below that not only tells what lines people speak, but also give directions on camera angles, etc.
Postcards from the Other Side Screenplay
Those camera angles are one of the many things covered in the packet handed out at the first meeting but also linked below.

We’ll do more fun things next week.

October 1, 2019
Hello and welcome to the club. We are excited to meet all of our new video students. The club will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 – 5:15 PM October 2nd through Novenber 4th. The club will be led by Patrick Fitzgerald and Jon-Mark Sandquist. We have both been working with students making video for over 10 years. The club will meet in the Lincoln Elementary Library right after school. Parents can buzz in at 5:15 and come down to the library to pick up their student.
As of now, there are 18 students registered, and we have a fun first meeting planned. After an brief meeting and orientation, we will break into two groups. Each group will make what we call an “icebreaker video” where we make a nearly completed video in an hour. In subsequent weeks, we will go over all of these steps in great detail, but on day one, we will have a pre-writen script very specific to the shots we will capture and edit. We will post the finished video on the Lincoln Elemetary Video Club Page for students to see and share if they like.
The first week, we will be making a video called “Green Screen Postcard”. Some of the students will be recorded in front of a green screen which is a very bright green color. For that reason, we ask that students not wear green shirts on the first day. No reason to have floating heads in the first video.
So come prepared to jump in and grab on, because it is going to be a fun ride.
Patrick and Jon-Mark
