The Wizard of Oz Intro

At the beginning of the video club, Ms. Blackburn asked me if we could have the de Paul video club record a video to play before the de Paul production of “The Wizard of Oz”.  (Quick backstory here is that I have known Ms. Blackburn for over 20 years, and some of our kids grew up playing together, so how could I say no?)  Her vision was that we have a local Kansas broadcast get interrupted by a special news report about incoming twisters.   Well, of course.  (And since I was a huge fan of the band Kansas when I was a teen, I was happy to liberally pepper the video with Kansas soundtrack!)  Sunny and I brought in a script,  but there was a lot of room for improvisation.  The kids came up with some great stuff.  Thanks to the people who went out of their way to let us know about it being well received during the  play.  We wish we could have been there.   But it will  live here on this page in infamy for a long while to come.

Please enjoy this de Paul Video Club production:

April, 2023 de Paul Art Class Videos

In April, 2023, Patrick Fitzgerald of Beargrass Media filled in for 3 weeks as the art teacher at de Paul. Below is a series of videos made with the students covering a variety of video and animation techniques.  We used iPads, cameras, and laptops using a variety of apps and software.   The videos are organized by grade, and the grades get larger as you scroll down the page.

If any of the kids wanted to continue making videos and the parents wanted advice about what devices to use or software to get, they can contact Patrick at: beargrassmedia@gmail.com

In March, 2020, right as the pandemic started, we were wrapping up an after-school video club at de Paul.  Below this point are our videos from that club.

Home Page for The de Paul School Video Production Club

March 2, 2020 – Inner Self

Ever have a day where you have to make a bunch of deceisions and don’t know what to do?  You could try listening to your inner self.  But what if your inner self has multiple personalities?  Who should you listen to then?

February 24, 2020 – Sleight of Hand

Ever see one of those mind-blowing card tricks?  Well buckle your safety belts, because THIS trick is going to throw you for a loop.

February 10, 2020 – Heavy Downbeat

Ever stepped on the bathroon scale wearing earbuds and wondered if the type of music you were listening to would affect how much you weigh?  Would “heavier” music add more weight than “lighter music”?  Here at Smith Laboratories, we do experiments to answer these types of pressing questions.   Don’t believe me?  Just watch!

February 3, 2020 – Kid Cafe

Inspector Joel Barrish of the Health Department comes to  inspect the Kid Cafe.  You know, it’s like one of those Cat Cafes, but for some reason, people who don’t have kids actually pay money to go there to visit with kids.  Go figure.

January 27, 2020 – The Standoff

The kids were informed by the school cafeteria that there wasn’t enough dessert for everyone.  And THAT is where our story begins.  The group that goes to lunch first gets dessert.  But how will they decide, and who will prevail?

January 13, 2020 – Steps

Sometimes you are just chained to your desk all day and really need to get out and move your body.  But what if the thing you need most is something you can’t have, and what if, by not having it, you somehow manage to obtain it anyway?  Confused?  Watch this, and you either will or will not be…

November 18, 2019 – Storm of the Century

All kids like a good snow day.  But in our fair city, the threat of snow is no guarantee.  Sometimes nature just misses the slam dunk that meteorologists predict.  What are kids to do?   There are a lot of superstitions about what makes it snow, like flushing ice cubes down the toilet… These kids try all of the reasonable ones plus many more.   How does it turn out?   You’ll just have to watch.

November 11, 2019 – Short Skits

Week 5 featured us breaking up into 2 groups:  One group did stop-motion animation, and and a skit while the other group did 2 video skits.  Each skit was very similar in that they are all about 1 minute and each contains: A stop-motion animated intro, music topical to the title, and small props.

  1. Cha Ching is based on an old Shel Silverstein poem called “Smart” although they performed it almost completely without words.
  2. Magic Phone is about two tricksters who get hoist by their own petard.
  3. Wish is also about a magical device with potentially dangerous consequences.  We made a mess, then quickly restored order.

All three are strung together here.  Enjoy!

November 4, 2019 – Political Ads

For election week, we recorded some phony ads for students running for class president.  It was an attempt to show the kids just how easy it is to change a point of view of a video by changing the music, changing it from color to black and white, and slowing down the footage.  We randomly drew lots for who the candidates would be.  Now watching them, we should have ensured at least one of the candidates be a girl.  Sorry, but we’ll do that next time…  Enjoy!

October 28, 2019 – Armed and Dangerous

For Halloween week, we decided to do a little spooky video with a prop that the kids could not get enough of.   Because the main skit ideas were very short, everyone got to try them out, which makes the finished product a little longer and probably at least 80% bloopers.  But honestly, kids seem to have more fun with bloopers anyway.

October 21, 2019 – Check it Out (Faces and Books)

The second week of the club, we broke into 2 groups and made 2 very similar videos in a series called  “Check it Out”.   Each one features group narration, and every kid in the club spoke on camera (even the ones for whom that is not their first instinct.)  There was no need for a teleprompter this week, because all of the lines are short enough to just repeat back on camera.  We even got a bit into the editing process, so the kids saw the “behind the scenes” part as well.  Here are the 2 videos:

Check it Out – Faces

This explores the differences in peoples’ faces, and hopefully, everyone comes away feeling like their face is unique and beautiful.

Check it Out – Books

This explores the many adventures you can have just by picking up a book and turning the pages.

October 14, 2019 – Midnight Milk Chug

The first week of the club, we worked on an odd video called “Midnight Milk Chug”, which is a vignette that appears on a fictitious show called “Time Flies”.  The purpose of such an icebreaker video, other than having fun, is to jump in and get both feet wet on the process.  The first week, the adults shepherd the students through an intense hour featuring a teleprompter, green screen, sound effects, sound track, and nearly all 16 club members making an appearance on screen.  The adults did all of the editing this week, but in future weeks, the kids will get more hands-on with all of the processes.

October 10, 2019

Hello and welcome to the club.  We are excited to meet all of our new video students.  The club will meet on Monday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:50 PM October 14th through Novenber 18th.  The club will be led by Patrick Fitzgerald and Jon-Mark Sandquist.  We have both been working with students making video for over 10 years.  The club will meet in rooms 35 and 36. After the club the students will dismiss from the playground doors at 5:00 PM.

As of now, there are 16 students registered, and we have a fun first meeting planned.  After an brief meeting and orientation, we will break into two groups.  Each group will make individual parts of what we call an “icebreaker video” where we record all of the parts of video in a a little over hour.  In subsequent weeks, we will go over all of these steps in great detail, but on day one, we will have a pre-writen script very specific to the shots we will capture and edit.  We will post the finished video on The de Paul School Video Production Club Page for students to see and share if they like.

We are also ataching a video release form for parents to fill out because the videos we create will be available on the page, and may be shared to others at the school.

In addition to  having fun and learning how to make videos, we will also be encouraging kids to consider entering their own ceations in the Louisville Childrens Film Festival student competition.  We will go over those details in the final weeks of the club.

The first week, we will be making a video called “Time Flies”.  A couple of the students will be recorded in front of a green screen which is a very bright green color.  For that reason, we will select students for that portion who are not wearing green shirts on the first day.  No reason to have floating heads in the first video.

So come prepared to jump in and grab on, because it is going to be a fun ride.

Patrick and Jon-Mark
